Devlog #3
Hello again!
It's been just over 2 weeks since my last devlog and I have a couple of updates to talk about!
Once again, these are kind of brain dumps for me so they are not very cohesive.
First of all, I have finished all the sprites needed! I have almost completed all backgrounds (I have 2 to finish colouring) and I have almost finished implementing all transitions/sprite expression changes etc. in the script file.
Here's a little preview of all the backgrounds!
They're nothing spectacular but I'm happy with how cohesive they are with my style. All of them are referenced and/or redrawn from free-to-use/royalty free assets and heavily stylized by me.
Sprites:
I wanted to quickly talk about my sprites and some of the design/redesign choices I've made.
If you've seen my webcomic or any of my characters before, when you play the final project you will notice that a couple of the characters either have a new outfit or have been more significantly redesigned.
The biggest changes are to Tama and Stasya who appear in the latter half of the game. They have been altered to more closely fit the "medieval" fantasy theme I seem to have going on.
New designs
Old designs
Tama in particular was a design I've wanted to change for a while as it is highly impractical to draw but also feels too modern. I've wanted to adjust it but could never settle on something that still felt like her.
Stasya's original design wasn't bad but I wanted to go for a squire sort of outfit - leaning more into her role at the Adventurer's Guild.
Some of the other characters have had some minor changes but I felt that these were the most significant.
Next goals:
My top priority is getting the last 2 backgrounds finished.
I have 2-3 more CGs to draw which include to 2 ending variants. These will likely take the longest as I will have to put a lot of effort into making these look nice. I'm putting them off until I have other tasks done, like finalizing the script, sprites and BGs.
If I can figure it out, I'd love to put in a CG gallery and a character information section that unlocks after completing the game and achieving one of the endings. I'm not very confident with coding so I'll have to do a lot of research and decide if it's truly worth the effort and time.
Round up of achievements/completion so far:
- Script completed coming in at ~6.5k words
- 8/8 sprites completed
- 7/9 backgrounds completed
- GUI customized
- Music selected and implemented in all days/scenes
- 3 endings implemented and checked for errors
- Dialogue options added and all routes checked
- 5/9 CGs completed
So, I'm mainly needing to get my art assets completed and I'll be in the home stretch!
It may sound silly but I'm incredibly proud that I have been able to stick to a single project for over a month and still feel motivated to complete it. I don't care if no one plays it, it's just been an incredibly satisfying and fun time to work on something with my characters that I love so much.
Anyway, that's it for me this time.
Fingers crossed, my next devlog will be me talking about the final stages.
